Adults are getting their kicks with the popular children's schoolyard game in a fall co-ed league through the Oshkosh, Wisconsin Recreation Department. The co-ed kickball league has 28 teams with 390 players in four leagues, and games are played Wednesday nights starting at 6 p.m. The league, now in its 5th season, was started as a way for men and women to socialize over something physical. If you were one of those kids in elementary school who thought that if you were picked last for kickball your life would be ruined, new research suggests that you might not have been too far off. Dr Janice Causgrove Dunn from the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation has led a study showing that children who were seen as less athletic by their peers were also seen as less popular, making them prone to loneliness and social ostracism. With the completion of the Wisconsin Big Cats Rescue Education Center only days away, the organization's founder is trying to raise $5,000 for some final touches. Big cat advocate Jeff Kozlowski said a fundraiser featuring kickball will be held starting at noon today at Firemens Park near the Rock Springs Community Center. Those who attend can get a plate of pork, potato salad, beans, chips and dessert bars for $7, Kozlowski said. Kickball, which is fantastic, will help save tigers, lions and other large cats that were hurt, homeless or otherwise in need of care. Baraboo News Republic 11/2/07
