A new federal study claims the U.S. Coast Guard remains unprepared to adequately protect oil tankers and other fuel ships from terrorist attacks in the nation's harbors. The report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office says Coast Guard personnel are stretched too thin in many ports to protect increasing numbers of ships importing crude oil, jet fuel and liquefied natural gas. The zebra mussel that has wreaked havoc in waterways around the nation has been found in California. The discovery in San Benito County is the first time the mussels have been seen in California. LA Times 1/16/08

 

President Bush exempted the Navy from an environmental law so it can continue using sonar in its anti-submarine warfare training off the California coast — a practice critics say is harmful to whales and other marine mammals. AP 1/16/08

 

Proposed regulations by the state Air Resources Board aimed at reducing emissions from diesel engines, including those used in agriculture, have farmers greatly concerned. The sweeping changes will impact about 400,000 in-state, on-road diesel vehicles and about another 1.2 million from out of state. Cali Farm Bureau Federation 1/16/08

 

Allowing California and other states to set their own fuel economy standards that override federal rules would threaten the existence of U.S. automakers, U.S. Rep. John Dingell said Tuesday. Detroit Free Press 1/16/08
